Pycnogenol is a natural plant product made from the bark of the European coastal pine, Pinus maritima. Pycnogenol is rich in proanthocyanidins, a special class of water-soluble antioxidant flavonoids which are excellent free radical scavengers. Proanthocyanidins are believed to play an important role in maintaining good health.

Directions
1 tablet daily, or as recommended by your health care professional. To build reserves rapidly start with one tablet per 100 pounds of body weight per day, for 7 to 10 days.

플라보노이드 복합체로 프로안토시아니딘 중합체(Oligomeric proanthocyanidins; OPCs 또는 PCOs)를 함유하고 있다. 특히 피크노제놀에는 카테킨(catechin), 에피카테킨(epicatechin), 페룰린산(ferulic acid), 카페익산(caffeic acid), 탁시폴린(taxifolin)의 등이 들어있다. 모두 수용성 플라보노이드로서 소나무 껍질 외에도 딸기, 포도 껍질, 크랜베리에서 추출한 것 모두가 이 계열의 바이오 플라보노이드(bioflavonoid)의 일반명으로 사용되고 있다.
피크노제놀은 강력한 항산화제로 널리 알려져 있는데, 피크노제놀의 올리고머(oligomer)는 항산화 작용과 모세혈관 강화 능력이 우수한 플라보노이드로 알려져 있다. 특히 피크노제놀은 세포 내의 강력한 항산화 작용을 나타내는데, 수산화기(OH-), superoxide기(O2), 일중항산소(singlet oxygen), peroxinitrate(ONOO-) 등의 활성산소(free radical)를 중화한다. 또한 콜라겐과 쉽게 결합하여 피부 노화를 억제하며, 혈소판 응집을 억제하고 LDL 콜레스테롤을 저해하여 뇌졸중이나 동맥경화 등의 심혈관계 질환을 예방한다. 이 외에도 항히스타민(antihistamine effect) 작용을 천식이나 알레르기에 효과적이며, 비타민C와 E의 항산화 작용을 증강하고, 주의력 결핍 과잉행동장애(ADHD : attention deficit and hyperactivity disorders) 개선 및 혈압강하 작용, 항염증 작용, 항암 작용 등을 가지고 있는 것으로 보고되고 있다.
